ERDF Support for Environmental Protection in Lithuania in 2004-2006
European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is one of the European Union‘s (EU) structural funds, that aims to reduce regional disparities and ensure stable and consistent development.
One of the ERDF funded areas is environmental protection and its quality improvement. Priority is given and funds are allocated for preventive measures. For example, it is aimed to counteract the harm done to the environment, clean and efficient use of energy is promoted and renewable energy resources are implemented.
Financial support of the EU structural funds in 2004-2006 was provided to Lithuania in accordance with the Single Programming Document (SPD). Measure 1.3 of this document is intended for the support of the projects in environmental quality improvement and prevention of harm to the environment. The Environmental Projects Management Agency (EPMA) is responsible for the selection, management and supervision of these projects.
The key areas of the projects funded:
· Development of water supply and wastewater treatment systems in small settlements;
· Cleaning up of past pollution in streams and lakes;
· Maintenance of the Baltic Sea coast;
· Establishment and management of protected and non-protected areas;
· Enhancement of the monitoring and prevention of the environment;
· Public informing and education.
During the period of 2004-2006 the EPMA received and selected 101 projects out of 202 applications and manages them. The total amount of the financial support allocated is LTL 118.983 million.
